Put On Your Superhero Cape

by Tereciah V. Smithen-Quintana

So now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh.  You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.” But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh?  Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?”  Exodus 3:10-11 NIV

Oh, my!  When I read those scriptures I can literally see the millions of faces God has called to create a societal change and they have said, just like Moses, “Who am I…Who am I that you should call me?”

Forty years before his mission Moses saw a change was needed in the way the Egyptians treated his brethren, the Israelites.  He tried at the time to intervene the best way he knew how.  But instead of the help he thought he would give, he ended up exiled with doubts, regrets, resentment and fear, as companions.

Have you tried to make a go for it once before?  Did you have all bright ideas with a can do attitude? You were going to change the world, then wham!  Your business went under!  Bam! Your marriage fell apart!  That idea you thought was the next best thing to slice bread didn’t take off, or your radical ideas didn’t take to well with the powers-to-be?

Did you slunk away to mediocrity; perhaps going back to what you thought was “safe”?  To what others said and encouraged you to do: “Get a normal job?”

Take out your superhero cape my friends!  It’s your time!  You’re being commissioned.  Consider this your burning bush and you’ve gotta go!

Just like Moses, I know you have your doubts.  Moses most likely wondered how he would be accepted.  Would they laugh at him or stone him as a heretic?  How was he supposed to just show up and say “Hey, I know you don’t know me to well, and you probably don’t think I’m really one of you because I was raised as an Egyptian, in a palace none the less, but, uhm, God, you know the big guy in the sky?  Well, he sent me and told me you guys needed rescuing and I’m supposed to do it.”

Listen, fear is a choice; faith is a verb, and trust is necessary.

Instead of focusing on who are you that God should send you, or commission you to create a change, focus instead on God and who HE is!  “I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.  I will strengthen you…” Isaiah 45:5 NIV

Come on, step out, yep, once again, and do what was in your heart from before.  Take that chance.  Walk, run, and then leap.  Take faith by the horns and say “God, I’m scared but I’m willing to try.”

Just for the record, I’m sure Moses was scared out of his flowing robes as well!

And when the powers-that-be, the naysayers, the doubters and the unbelievers ask you “What makes you think you can do this?” Or, “Who do you think you are?!”  When their chatter gives way to doubt on bad days, remind yourself what God told Moses.  He said “I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent you.’”

And The I AM is sending YOU!

Isn’t that AWESOME!!!

Be Blessed!
